The shape is based on medieval monastery, herb and vegetable gardens, as can be found in "cottage gardens" today. The plan is largely based on a garden that existed in the 9th century at a monastery and is described in detail by Abbot Walahfrid Strabo in the famous poem "Hortulus". All plants have been cultivated for centuries, most of them introduced to our region by monks from the Mediterranean region.
