Of "Ethnic Shows", "Black Facing" and "Black Lives Matter".
Short lecture
When the Ingelheim explorer Carlo von Erlanger returned from his last East Africa expedition in 1901, he was accompanied by an Abyssinian servant whose "intensely shiny black skin colour generally attracted attention" (Ingelheimer Anzeiger, 27.8.1901). At that time, many Germans were fascinated by the colonial "adventure" in Africa. They visited colonial exhibitions or so-called Völkerschauen, in which racist stereotypes were staged. One example of this was the "colonial carnival" that the people of Ober-Ingelheim celebrated in 1937 around a made-up "Negro chief with entourage" (Ingelheimer Anzeiger, 8.1.1937). The short lecture takes a look at Ingelheim's colonial history and links it to the growing awareness of ethnic diversity.
