“Here I stand. Conscience and Protest – 1521 to 2021” in the City of Worms Museum in the Andreasstift

Rhineland-Palatinate Exhibition as part of the Luther Year

The Rhineland-Palatinate Exhibition “Here I stand. Conscience and Protest – 1521 to 2021” from 3rd July until 30th December takes the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s refusal to recant at the Diet of Worms as an opportunity to present and examine critically the historical development of the notion “freedom of conscience and of protest” with reference to various examples right up to present times.
The central aspect of the exhibition is Martin Luther’s appearance in Worms after being summoned, the significance of this historic event and also the myth which grew up around it and which developed a huge dynamic force that has continued up to the present day. A second part of the exhibition focuses on the topic “freedom of conscience and of protest” itself.
It is therefore not only Martin Luther who figures in the exhibition but also a number of others who, since the 16th century and up to the present, have bravely and resolutely stood up for their ideals in word and deed, many of them paying with their lives for having the courage of their convictions. The valiant writer on women’s rights Olympe de Gouges and the young Sophie Scholl (who opposed NS tyranny) continue to grip our imagination today for the way they set an example with their courage, and they are presented in the exhibition in the form of exhibits, documents and key events in their lives. Others who are represented include figures who fought for equal rights and freedom such as Martin Luther King, Nelson Mandela, Georg Büchner, and the protagonists of the “Peaceful Revolution”, which led to the reunification of Germany in 1989.
The exhibition is supported by a large number of accompanying events and an extensive museum education programme for various age groups. St: Magnus’ Church in Worms, where Protestant services were held as early as 1522, is the location for a student film project titled “The intrepid voices”, presented with the participation of the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg.

The Rhineland-Palatinate Exhibition receives support from the State of Rhineland-Palatinate, the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media, the Protestant Church in Hesse and Nassau, and the foundation “Gut für die Region“ (“Good for Our Region”) of the local savings bank (Sparkasse Worms-Alzey-Ried).
