Wine generates employment in Rheinhessen. The tourism, which is mainly initiated by wine, creates 13.500 jobs directly and secures another 6.500 jobs indirectly (Figures according to Statistisches Landesamt).
And yet, Rheinhessen wine is not only an important economic factor for the region. The majority of Rheinhessen wines are sent to all parts of Germany. The export comprises a share of 20%. Rheinhessen winemakers are also important customers in the logistics sector.
Winemakers need machinery, equipment and materials from the supplying industries, in order to cultivate, produce and market their wines. This can be tractors and tools for cultivating their vineyards, pumps, tanks and filters for the work in the cellar. Just as well as everything that is needed for packaging: bottles, closures and boxes are just a few examples. The Rheinhessen wine industry thus also strengthens economic development in the area.
Since 2012, Rheinhessenwein e.V. has been awarding a sustainability award each year in order to win over this wine-related economy to sustainability issues.
