Major state exhibition

The emperors and the pillars of their power

How did Charlemagne or Friedrich Barbarossa come to the imperial throne? Were there networks and lobbyists in the Middle Ages? And why did the region on the Rhine play a central role in the great ruling dynasties for many centuries?

The major state exhibition "The Emperors and the Pillars of their Power - From Charlemagne to Friedrich Barbarossa", which will be shown from September 9, 2020 to April 18, 2021 in the Mainz State Museum of the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage Rhineland-Palatinate (GDKE), is going exactly these questions. In a fascinating show with unique exhibits, the state exhibition for the first time illuminates the dynamic network of relationships in which emperors and kings, knights and imperial princes, citizens and cities were interwoven.

The impressive evidence of medieval culture can still be experienced today in Rhineland-Palatinate. The state exhibition with which the imperial year begins is the ideal starting point for a journey into the Middle Ages with many offers for all age groups.
