Cultivating in the vineyard

Wine view in March 2019

In Märzen the farmer harnesses the Rösslein

As romantic as in the more than 200 years old "peasant song", it is true that in today's agriculture is no longer, today but rather the "Diesel-Rösslein" are clamped. But the loosening of soils in the spring is still the first tillage in the vineyards.

Although this is not a seedbed as in agriculture or as in the home garden but it is here to stimulate the soil life and promote the mineralization of nutrients, as they are needed for the beginning of vegetation. Also, this cultivation spoils the growth of the winter months to avoid water competition with the vines.

At the same time, the refraction of the capillaries of the soil and the associated evaporation prevent the groundwater reserves of the winter months from being better stored for the summer. The precipitation of the last few weeks was again below average and also the wind of the last days, the moisture quickly dried out again, so that you may be happy in the summer for every drop of water in the ground.

Contrary to the fears in February, the Rebentwicklung has not progressed as quickly as expected. In the next few days, liquid (under winegrowers: "juice") will drip from the cuts, which is an indication of the beginning of life in the vines. However, the actual sprouting can only be expected at the end of April.
