Cultivating in the vineyard

March 2019

Loosening of the soil

There is an old German folk song singing about the farmer taking out his horses in march, in order to do his fields. As romantic as the more than 200 years old "peasant song"is, in today's agriculture it is not quite like that aymoe. Today, it is rather the "Diesel-horse" that is taken out. But the loosening of soils in the spring still is the first soil cultivation in the vineyards.

Although the winegrower does not prepare his soil for new seeds, like the farmers do in agriculture, he needs to stimulate the soil life and promote the mineralization of nutrients, as they are needed for the beginning of vegetation. Also, this cultivation stops the plants that have stated growing over the winter months in order to avoid water competition with the vines.

At the same time, the refraction of the capillaries of the soil and the associated evaporation help the groundwater reserves of the winter months to be stored better for the summer. The precipitation of the last few weeks again was below average and in the wind of the last days, the moisture quickly dried out again, so that in summer, every drop of water going into the sil will be precious.

In contrast to the fears from February, the development of the vines did not progresse as quickly as expected. In the next few days, liquid (under winegrowers: "sap") will drip from the cuts, which is an indication of the beginning of life in the vines. However, the actual bud break can only be expected at the end of April.
