March 2018

Life soon awakens in the vines

The sun had shown itself briefly last week before it became cloudy and rainy again. After a very mild January, February has slowed down the development of the vines with its cold temperatures. Also, the March should be cool and wet, which does not bother the winemakers but more. Too deep is still the shock of the April frost of the past year, the consequences of which were due to the early outbreak.

Nevertheless, the warming sunbeams do not only awaken the first "spring fever" with us humans, the vines awake to new life. At the interfaces of the rods it drips at mild afternoon temperatures.

The winemakers also say "weeping" or "bleeding" of the vine. These small drops of juice at the interface prevent the entry of pathogens into the vine. Up to one liter of it can produce a vine in temperatures within the double-digit range within 24 hours. Scholars and physicians certified the precious drop already in ancient times a healing effect. They were good for the eyes and ears, stimulated the eyesight and hearing, they had a positive effect on the head, stomach, intestine, kidney and bladder, even relieved nausea and contained the growth of warts.

The pruning is now finished in most farms. Even with the "bending", the winemakers have made very good progress. In March, the winemakers spend more time in the basement than in the vineyard, as now the 2017 white wines are bottled to present these in the numerous spring tastings to the wine lovers.
