Nature and ecology
The preservation of soil fertility and the promotion of biodiversity are the special focus of sustainable viticulture. Intensive greening in the vineyard, targeted seedling and the lowest possible and targeted crop protection will promote biodiversity in the vineyard. The resulting balance between beneficials and pests is a great asset to both vine and nature. Rheinhessen is the largest producer of organic wines. Currently we cultivate a total of 2,315 hectares of ecological land, and the area is constantly growing. This corresponds to a share of 9.4% of the annual wine harvest in Rheinhessen and represents half of the production of organically produced wines in Rhineland-Palatinate. ECOVIN was founded in Rheinhessen. Nationwide, this association of organic winegrowers has more than 200 member companies; 40 of them are from Rheinhessen. Other Rheinhessen-based companies are certified by Demeter, Naturland, Bioland or other associations.
