Nature and ecology
The preservation of soil fertility and the promotion of biodiversity are in special focus of sustainable viticulture. Diverse vegetation in the vineyard, matching cover crops and little and cost efficient plant protection are supporting biodiversity in the vineyards. The resulting balance between beneficial insects and parasites is a great asset to both vine and nature. Rheinhessen is the largest producer of organic wines in Germany. Currently, a total of 2,315 hectares is cultivated organically. And the area is constantly growing. This corresponds to a share of 9.4% of the annual wine harvest in Rheinhessen and represents half of the production of organically produced wines in Rhineland-Palatinate. ECOVIN was founded in Rheinhessen. Nationwide, this association of organic winegrowers has more than 200 members; 40 of them are from Rheinhessen. Other Rheinhessen-based wineries are certified by Demeter, Naturland, Bioland or other associations.
