It hit the hellfire in Gundersheim especially hard. There almost all grapes have been destroyed. But also adjacent locations such as the Morstein in Westhofen has it hard. The fatal thing is that especially the late-ripening grapes such as Riesling or Pinot Noir are not yet ripe, but now start to rot immediately. It is important to remove the damaged grapes from the vineyard as soon as possible, so that the rot does not spread to the still healthy grapes. In the case of the early ripening grapes, the harvesters are already using lightning to save the remaining grapes.
The winemakers deal with the situation very differentiated. Some write off their crop completely in the affected areas, as they can no longer harvest the desired qualities here. Others want to wait and see how the health of the grapes develops and then decide spontaneously. Still others who market larger quantities of Federweiss are already out reading. And some winemakers have caught the news of hail damage even on vacation cold, they are now on the way home.
