The harvest begins - and is as different as ever before
In Rheinhessen, the grape harvest has started, but not everywhere rightly and just now, the enormous differences in the maturity of the grapes are immediately apparent.
In Wonnegau, where it rained the most this year, the harvest is in full swing. In the middle of Rheinhessen, on the hills around Alzey, it is still very quiet. Here it has rained extremely little, so that the maturity of the grapes is a bit delayed and presented the sunburn spared grapes still very healthy. Along the Rhine some rains have burst due to the rains of the first of September, so that in these parcels there is a rush to read.
The strong differences in precipitation, partly sharply differentiated from vineyard to vineyard, should also be reflected in the yields. The large earnings of the past year will be far from being achieved, and Rheinhessen is likely to post earnings slightly below the long-term average. The quality looks great, also the tartaric acid are fresher than last year and together with the good but not extremely high fructose content we can look forward to a fresh, fruity vintage. Especially the currently cooler nights and the sunny days now promote the development of aromas in the grapes.
But you should not praise the vintage earlier, as he is in the basement and so we are curious to see what the winemakers in Rheinhessen in the next few weeks from these promising grapes kleltern.
