The vines are brought into shape
Due to the beautiful weather last week, the winemakers have made good progress with the pruning, some even finished. The directly following activity is the so-called "bending".
Usually, there is only one shoot per vine, that is left from last year. These shoots are now bent over and attached to the bottom wire of the wire frame. It is important to be careful, especially in the cold morning, that it does not break off, otherwise the yield of this vine is reduced reduced. With this bending, the buds and thus the upcoming shoots, are distributed evenly in the wire frame, which promises enough sunshine and wind of the future grapes. Nowadays, for this work, there are technical aids which do the tedious tying with a battery drive. Working with such an electrical tying device does not only protect the wrists and fingertips, it also is much faster.
At the moment, the winemakers fear a very early budding, due to continuous warm temperatures. If there is frost in April or May, the younf buds could be massively damaged. Every winemaker still remembers the experiences they made in 2017.
