The vines are brought into shape
Due to the beautiful weather last week, the winemakers have made good progress with the pruning, some even finished. The directly following activity is the so-called "bending" or "Gerten".
Mostly there is only one shoot from last year per vine. These shoots are now bent over and attached to the bottom wire of the wire frame. It is important to be careful, especially in the cold morning, that the tail does not break off, otherwise the yield of this vine is enormously reduced. With this bending, the buds and thus the upcoming shoots are distributed evenly in the wire frame, which promises a good tanning and drying of the later grapes. For this work, there are now technical aids which do the tedious tying the rods on the floor by means of battery drive. Working with such an electrical binding device not only protects the wrists and fingertips, it is much faster.
The winemakers fear at the moment with continuation of the warm temperatures an extremely early budding. In a frost quarry in April / May, the young buds could then be massively damaged. Every winemaker has the suffering experiences from 2017 still in mind.
