Mainzer Kammerspiele at Malakoff Passage is a privately owned theatre established by freelance actors in 1986. It specialises in modern plays.
Every season, there are more than 200 performances, including on average seven opening nights of own productions. At the moment, nine companies work at Mainzer Kammerspiele, performing traditional and experimental plays, contemporary ballet and topical revues as well as musicals for children. The theatre is particularly proud of its performances of works by contemporary authors, premieres and new adaptations.
Through its festivals (puppet theatre festival, children's theatre festival), guest performances (Chanson de Luxe) and cooperation with other like-minded institutions and initiatives, the theatre makes sure that it has something to offer for everyone.
Mainzer Kammerspiele is financially supported by the State of Rhineland-Palatinate and the City of Mainz who cover most of its fixed costs such as rent, administration and advertisement. It can also count on the support of a number of sponsors and the tireless work of the society of friends of the theatre.
The individual companies rely entirely on the income from ticket sales, which pay for stage design, props and costumes, promotional material, royalties and the fees for actors, directors, musicians, technicians and other staff members.
The theatre is managed by permanently employed staff, a team of volunteers as well as interns who work closely together with the members of the various theatre companies. All in all, about 90 people work at Mainz Kammerspiele.
Every season, it attracts around 45,000 people to its performances. The theatre can also be hired for private events.
