In the midst of planning a new winegrower's farm outside the city, the Hemmes family makes a turnaround and recognizes the marketing idea par excellence in the old school building: the old elementary school becomes the »Vinothek Weinschule«.
In the former classrooms, a vinotheque, tasting rooms and a professional restaurant for events are set up. The fact that the building is a listed building was by no means a handicap for the Hemmes family. The vote with the monuments office went smoothly, on the contrary, the strict specification of the building materials to be used even spared the agony of choice. The building is also environmentally friendly with geothermal heating.
The Hemmes family also stages the overall concept »Wine School«. There is no "normal" wine tasting, but the wine tasting is set up like school lessons. In the field of biology, for example, it is about the cultivation and botany of the vine, in chemistry one speaks about the fermentation of the wine. History is about wine culture. Frank Hemmes disguises himself like a schoolteacher from yesteryear and also distributes "punishments". Anyone who is not good has to "detention", which the test guests especially like to do, as there is a chocolate candy with a noble sweet wine. The breaks for a snack in between are heralded in style with the old school bell. So every wine tasting becomes a particularly authentic experience, which is certainly unique.
The concept was awarded "Best of Wine Tourism Award" by the Great Wine Capitals in the category "Sustainability in Wine Tourism" in 2010.
