Rheinhessenwein eV initiated sustainability in the industry in 2012. The kick-off event was the sustainability congress for the wine industry. At the same time, the Heidelberg Institute for Energy and Environmental Research (IFEU) was commissioned to carry out a sustainability analysis for the wine industry in Rheinhessen. The key ecological and social indicators for the sustainable development of Rheinhessen have been worked out. It is important to implement this with all those involved. In the meantime, there are close cooperations with the Competence Center for Wine Market and Wine Marketing at the Rheinhessen-Nahe-Hunsrück service center in Oppenheim, with the departments of viticulture and cellar management at DLR, with the Weinbauverband Rheinhessen, but also with various universities and state-owned specialist agencies. For suppliers and service providers in the wine industry, the competition for the prize for sustainability has been held every year since 2012.
