Quartz sand has been mined in the Kriegsheim sand pit since 1906, initially by the Eisenberg company Schiffer & Kircher AG, which merged with the Didier company in 1959. The sand was washed out in the "sand wash" and the kaolin was extracted. Due to various changes in processing, only the quartz sand itself is needed today and is usually extracted and marketed once a week by the HeidelbergCement company. The mining rights are secured for years to come. In addition, the sand washing area is a biotope with a unique habitat for many endangered species.
