Katholisches Gotteshaus aus dem Jahr 1782

A parish and parish church in Offstein is first mentioned in a document of 1212 and recorded in the "Worms Synodale" of 1496. At that time, the Cyriakus-Stift in Worms-Neuhausen received the patronage of the parish of Offstein. This only ended with the dissolution of the monastery at the beginning of the 19th century. The Offstein parish church was part of the former diocese of Worms and later belonged to the diocese of Mainz. After the Reformation, the Catholic church was assigned to the Reformed parish of Offstein in 1567, but was returned to the Catholics during the Palatinate church division of 1706. From about 1730 onwards, there was increasing evidence that the church was in serious need of repair. Repairs were delayed again and again until finally, on 15 April 1779, it was noted: "...as a church collapsed". Under the aforementioned patronage, a new building was therefore erected in 1782. The area around the old church was used as a cemetery for centuries until 1802. Today, only four gravestones point to this former cemetery, among them the gravestone of Pastor Georg Lulay, who died on 18 April 1870 and was the only one buried in the already closed cemetery. The church is built in a west-east direction and can accommodate about 200 worshippers. It is 26 m long and 10.45 m wide. The single-nave building has a roof height of 14 m. The nave measures 16.70 m. The nave measures 16.70 x 8.55 m. The chancel, which is rounded to the east, is 7.50 m long. The church roof has an area of 525 sq m and the tower 150 sq m, both were re-roofed with "Cauber" slate in 1965. The vestibule has a glass window depicting the church patron saint "St. Martinus". The glass workshops Münch, Groß-Umstadt created this work. The church and the rectory have been listed since 1972. Excerpts from the commemorative publication 800 Years of the Parish of St. Martinus Offstein by Helmut Zorn in 2012. Compiled by Erich Weber.
