Chardonnay is one of the most popular grape varieties in the world and delights wine enthusiasts across the globe. Its roots trace back to Western Asia, from where it made its way to France. In Burgundy — the cradle of exceptional winemaking — the grape found its new home. Incidentally, the variety owes its name to the small village of Chardonnay, located near the town of Tournus in the heart of Burgundy.
Chardonnay has also enjoyed great success in Rheinhessen. Officially approved in 1991, this internationally celebrated grape now thrives on an impressive 1,087 hectares — accounting for a proud 4% of the region’s total vineyard area. Today, Chardonnay is a firmly established part of Rheinhessen winemakers’ portfolios, delighting connoisseurs with its versatility and elegance.
Rheinhessen delights with first-class Chardonnays that combine elegance and diversity.
Here, we present a selection of the key players:

"Burgundy wonders" is what observers of the scene call what has been happening in the vineyards along the Rhine and in the hills in recent years. At the beginning of the 1990s, only 4% of the total vineyard area in Rheinhessen was planted with Burgundy grape varieties. However, over the past 30 years, the Pinot family has experienced impressive growth and now covers nearly 7,000 hectares, occupying about 26% of the vineyard area. The Burgundies have truly become a success story in Rheinhessen.
