Gundersheimer Höllenbrand

Creating cultural landscape & promoting biodiversity

In an exemplary land consolidation project, the interaction of nature conservation and economic interests of the participating winegrowing enterprises was exemplary implemented in the Gundersheimer Höllenbrand - Germany's largest breeding region for the wheatear - in a mutual reconciliation of interests.

Around ten kilometers of dry-stone walls were preserved and renovated in the 100-hectare south-facing vineyard site, so that the breeding area of the wheatear and the "residential areas" of the sand lizard and little owl could be preserved. At the same time, the management of the vineyards has been significantly improved by the consolidation of small parcels and by some new farm roads. The preservation of this historic cultural landscape is of great importance for the winemakers as well as for the visitors and the tourism development as a whole.
