In 1521, Martin Luther was summoned to Worms to recant his theses to the emperor. He resisted and was brought to safety in Wartburg Castle while fleeing.
This important chapter in German church history can be explored today on the Luther Trail in Hesse: In 21 stages, the scenic trail leads through the wine-growing region of Rhine-Hesse, through Hesse and Thuringia to the Luther city of Eisenach.
It touches on places, churches and monasteries that are important in the history of the church.
