The wine-growing community of Schornsheim was first mentioned in 782 a.d. in a donation document of Charlemagne to the Hersfeld Monastery. He provided his Schornsheim estate along with the church and land to the "Holy Lioba" as a retirement home. She is counted among the most significant women of the Middle Ages. Although Lioba from Tauberbischofsheim lived in Schornsheim for only a few months until her death, she remains very present here to this day. A bronze statue of her as a Benedictine abbess stands in the middle of the village square, surrounded by an artificially created stream. At her feet stands a sewing machine, also made of bronze. It symbolizes the long tradition of many Schornsheim tailoring families who worked for major factories in Mainz, Worms, and Darmstadt.
