The Kirschbühl Hollow

To describe the formation of a hollow way, one cannot avoid taking a look at the loess.
The loess that was blown to us during the last Ice Age consists of 20% lime and remains stable in its angular shape at the cliff edges and in the hollow ways.

By driving vehicles on the hollow ways, in earlier years with carts and livestock, the loess is loosened and turns to dust. During heavy rain, the loose soil is washed away, leading to ever-deepening paths - a hollow way is created.

Today, many hollow ways are paved to prevent further deepening.

Hollow ways are ecologically valuable habitats for many plants and animals as they provide special conditions.

Two interpretations can be applied.

Prof. Ramge derives the name from the cherries, as the church and the cherry can be confused in dialect. According to his interpretation, it refers to a mountain planted with cherry trees.

Another derivation could be.

In the valley, there is the field “Im Gries," above it “Am langen Rech" or "Vogelgesang." So it could be justified in dialect.

Above the Gries, on the mountain.

From that arose “Am Griesbühl" and through a metathesis, that is, a transposition of “r" and “i,” “Am Kirsbühl” was formed, thus “Kirspel.” This also corresponds to the spelling of the first mention. It is interesting that in the land map from 1934 the field is named “Auf dem Kirchspiel,” but in 1953 it is stated as “Auf dem Kirschbühl.”

Today it is called “Auf dem Kirschbühl,” in Westhofen “Kerschbel” or also "Kirchspiel-Hohl."

In any case, it is one of the oldest wine-growing regions.
