The Luther Church was built in 1949 as the first church in Mainz after the Second World War. Developed as part of an emergency church program by architect Otto Bartning, it combines simple construction with impressive effect. Its bright, warm atmosphere, the central wooden cross, and the Bauhaus-influenced architecture create a place of peace, solidarity, and hope.
The church is regarded as a testament to the reconstruction and the cohesion of the community. It stands on historically significant ground – directly at the Roman theater and near the Mainz Citadel. Today, the Luther Church is not only a spiritual center but also an architecturally and historically significant site in the cityscape of Mainz.
