Things are moving at the Museum of Ancient Seafaring!

The museum is currently under reconstruction. The exhibition is being modernised with funding from the federal government and the state of Rhineland-Palatinate from the “Aktionsplan Leibniz Research Museums”. The museum will reopen in 2024!

Roman antiquity was a time when seafaring connected worlds and people. But why do people actually build ships? How do they create networks with them? What infrastructures do they need for this? What are the consequences of the mobility resulting from seafaring - for the world and for people? And above all: what traces does all this leave behind, then and now, in our minds and in the world? The wrecks of Mainz's Roman ships, models of ancient watercraft, merchandise, stone monuments and many other objects provide visitors to the new exhibition with answers to these questions and give you a glimpse of the people behind the things. This creates an "experiential space of the past" that can also inspire us to think about ourselves.

The Museum of Ancient Seafaring is part of the Leibniz Zentrum für Archäologie (LEIZA).
