Built in its present form in 1857 by the last "Chausseegeld-Erheber" and "Gemeinde-Salzauswieger". The house was a customs post on the border between the Grand Duchy of Hesse and the Kingdom of Bavaria. Here, the state road toll was collected and the trade in salt and spirits was controlled and taxed. At that time, a pound of salt cost eight pfennigs in Hesse and twelve pfennigs in Bavaria, making salt smuggling a lucrative business. Text taken from Wachenheim - historical buildings with kind permission. Additions by Wolf-Dieter Egli Today, the building houses a café and restaurant - Zum alten Zollhaus.
