Peters Heisje

Peters Heisje is over 150 years old, built around 1850. The vineyard on which it stands has changed ownership several times over the years, along with the little house.

In the 1950s, the land belonged to the Käufer family. Since the 1980s, the little house has been owned by the Bechtheim winery Antony.

History / Stories / Anecdotes:

In 1935, Heinrich-Jakob Käufer from Westhofen acquired the vineyard along with the vineyard house.
When looking from the vineyard house towards Westhofen, potatoes were cultivated on a part of the plot on the right side after the war. In the "Aufschwung," Mr. Käufer planted the first Riesling there.
Since around 1980, the vineyard has been owned by the Bechtheim winery Antony.

Around 1950, there was a carpenter named Dieter Fuchs, who also worked as a vineyard guard in the autumn. At that time, muzzle-loading pistols were still used. He had, as it was said, "a good head on his shoulders." So he asked little Peter Käufer, then about 7 years old, if he wanted to scare his father. Peter was wearing shorts on that warm day. He took the pistol and carried it with the barrel pointing down, slightly concealed on the right at his side. However, before he could scare his father, a shot went off and little Peter shot himself in the right calf!  He ran away, as his father must not find out, but that evening the parish nurse Sophie had to be called. The result was a treatment with acetic clay and a stern lecture.

The wall on the right and left of the little house reflected heat so well that the Käufer children could eat the grapes in the parallel row first each autumn.
