The church is first mentioned in a document in 1284. Burned down during the Thirty Years' War, it was rebuilt in the 17th century while retaining the Gothic forms. The later expansions and renovations in the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries, to which the church owes its current appearance, are documented by various dates and inscriptions. After a lengthy construction period, it was completed in 1896 with the installation of the sharply rising Gothic helmet as its tower roof.
