Neueröffnung in 2024: Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum (aktuell geschlossen)

As a Leibniz Research Institute and Museum for Archaeology, the Römisch-Germanisches-Zentralmuseum (RGZM) studies the material legacies of humankind from the Pleistocene to the Middle Ages aiming to understand human behaviour and action, human activity and thought, and the development and transformation of societies. The concentration of archaeological, scientific, restoration and IT expertise within one institute allows it to examine human material remains from different perspectives over a period of 2.6 million years. As one of eight Leibniz research museums, the RGZM combines excellent research with exhibitions and, with its educational mission, is at the same time a place of dialogue with the public.

Previously based in the Electoral Palace of Mainz, a striking new building is currently being completed for the RGZM in the south-east of the city, which is scheduled to be completed before the end of 2022. The new building will offer around 14 500 square metres of space for all research areas, laboratories, workshops, depots, the library and, of course, the new Museum of Archaeology. You will soon be able to enjoy a brand new permanent exhibition here that addresses relevant contemporary issues as well as current research results.

The new museum is expected to open in mid-2024.
