Rest stones or rests, also called 'Napoleon's benches' elsewhere, were found in the district, mostly on paths that led to market towns. They offered the opportunity to place baskets with goods carried on one's head on the upper stone and to sit down to rest on the lower bench. The baskets that had been placed high could then be picked up again without outside help when they left. The term 'Napoleon's benches' came about when the French emperor built many of these benches to gain the trust and approval of the population in the occupied regions.
