St. Marien is a small church. Consecrated in October 1949, the church served for many years as the central place of worship for all Catholics in the small district of Sporkenheim in Ingelheim. Over the decades, the central worship activities have gradually shifted more towards the rest of the town, so that now services are only held here every two weeks on Friday evenings. Nevertheless, the church remains a focal point of the area. It is small but lovely, and especially for people who pass by on walks, bike rides, or hikes, it offers space for personal prayer, reflection, and contemplation.
The idea to turn St. Marien into a media church came from a dedicated family from Sporkenheim. While on vacation, the family experienced a media church elsewhere in Germany and was enthusiastic about the concept – thus, an idea was born, and the implementation followed over a period of about 18 months. The equipping of St. Marien as a media church was made possible by financial support from the Diocese of Mainz as part of the Innovation Fund. As an innovative project, the resting place for the soul was awarded and selected as a funding project.
From the outside, St. Marien in Sporkenheim appears to be just an ordinary village church, but a surprise lies within. Texts, colorful colors, music, and for those who wish, even everything together – St. Marien is a media church. With a panel right at the entrance, one can control the lighting atmosphere and music in the church space themselves. A special experience that can be individually adjusted.
A small taste of the media church is offered by a short video from the Diocese of Mainz.
