St. Wendelinuskapelle aus dem Jahr 1535

The St. Wendelinus Chapel in the area of the western end of the village is the oldest building still standing in Offstein. The chapel was built outside the village around 1535. It is unknown who initiated, executed and financed the construction of the building. The chapel was also called the "Heiligenhäuschen" or "Helljer-Heisje" for short. The original wooden gate was replaced by an iron one. This has a central rosette around the locking device, the upper part of which is a sun disk with iron spokes running diagonally outwards, similar to the corona of the sun. This new door system makes the interior seem brighter and friendlier and invites many a passer-by to pause or even pray. This small building is supported in this by its exposed location and its surroundings with shrubs and some medium-sized trees as well as a garden bench. Inside, there is a brick altar table. This altar is adorned with a weatherproof baroque statue of St. John the Baptist. The original of the 17th century saint was integrated into the interior of the parish church after its restoration around 1990. For many decades, the St. Wendelinus Chapel has been used for religious services on the Feast of Corpus Christi. St. Wendelin was a popular patron saint of cattle and fields, and was venerated as a peasant saint. According to tradition, he was an Iro-Scottish king's son who lived around 554 to about 617. His bones rest in the Saarland town of St Wendel, in the basilica there. The town and basilica bear his name.
