The customs tower was built in the 14th century and is located on the western edge of Elsheim near the 11,000-maid mill. It used to be in an important strategic position and served in the Middle Ages as a customs station on the postal road from Mainz to Bad Kreuznach. There, anyone traveling on this road had to cross the Selz. South of it lay the old town of Elsheim. The tower, which formerly displayed the imperial eagle and an inscription, is the remnant of a previously fortified residential building with two round corner towers.
