About 10 million years ago, the primordial Rhine flowed from Worms to Bingen through what is now our Rheinhessen.
During the early sand extraction for construction purposes, bones and teeth were already being found. The discoveries in the Dinotherium sands, named after the Dinotherium, made Eppelsheim famous in the scientific world. To date, 35 species of mammal have been found and described, 25 of which were discovered for the first time in Eppelsheim.
Since 1996, excavations have been taking place every summer (approximately 3 months) in the excavation protection area in the field "Auf dem Alzeyer Rech." The excavation goal is, in addition to searching for fossils, the exploration of the primordial Rhine. On the experience day, guided tours are offered in the museum and at the excavation site. The museum's support association ensures catering at the nearby barn café.
