“Once upon a time…” Ingelheim’s “Neue Mitte” – A City Reinventing Itself
Short Lecture

Today, retail stores, cafés, restaurants, and bustling squares define the character of Ingelheim’s “Neue Mitte.” A look back at the first half of the last century shows that this development was by no means a given, but rather the result of urban planning efforts spanning many decades. The merger of several autonomous villages into a single city in 1939 brought with it a series of problems that were felt well into the recent past: There was no established city center. Two major thoroughfares running through what are now pedestrian zones caused difficulties for local retailers. It was only after a complete and innovative redesign that a city center was created, leading to the integration of the individual neighborhoods in the city center. Using contemporary images, this lecture traces the development of what is now Ingelheim’s “Neue Mitte” from the early 20th century to the present.
