A day of horror – natural disaster in Heidesheim
Short lecture
April 2, 1876, is a dark day in the history of Heidesheim and Großwinternheim: on the afternoon and evening of what had initially been a sunny and warm Sunday, several thunderstorms with unusually high rainfall descended on the area. The tranquil Mühlbach stream became a raging river, devastating the center of Heidesheim and sweeping eight people, including children, to their deaths. The extreme weather also left a trail of destruction in Großwinternheim, claiming lives there as well. On the occasion of the 150th anniversary, the lecture summarizes the course, effects, and consequences of the storm disaster and commemorates the victims.
