“Fibula, Stilus, Latrunculus” – What small finds from a Roman villa tell us about its former inhabitants
Short lecture
Anyone walking in the Selztal valley near Großwinternheim will experience a typical Rheinhessen landscape: vineyards and fruit trees dominate the scene. But if you look more closely, you will discover traces of a distant past: fragments of bricks, piles of stones. Almost 2000 years ago, a large “villa rustica,” a Roman country estate, stood here. Over a period of ten years, small and tiny finds were collected during inspections. They reveal a surprising amount about the people who settled here. These are personal objects that bring life to life: brooches, bracelets, a glass game piece, a bronze stylus, and even a small black marble makeup palette. All these artifacts are like a glimpse through a keyhole: they reveal facets of everyday life and allow us to reconstruct the character, comfort, and lifespan of this Roman settlement.
