Reading with Françoise Hauser – “Japan – Insights into a Fascinating Country”

Japan is colorful, old and modern at the same time – and full of little mysteries that do not immediately reveal themselves to travelers: Who is the little figure with a bib around its neck that can be found everywhere along the wayside? Why do so many Japanese drive around in identical, box-shaped cars? How do the Kanji work (and why are Chinese characters even used)? What is behind the melodies that announce the subway stations? Why do train conductors and train attendants always wave their hands in the air? In her new book “Japan – Insights into a Fascinating Country” (Fischer Verlag), journalist and Asia expert Françoise Hauser has gathered all these questions – and of course also answers them in this mix of reading and slide show.

Françoise Hauser is a freelance journalist and author, but she also works as a podcast producer and intercultural trainer for the Asian region. Originally, she studied Sinology, geography, and applied linguistics in Erlangen, Nanjing, and Tainan. For more than 30 years, she has regularly traveled in Asia – and of course especially often in Japan, not least due to family ties. Other Japan publications by her include “Japan for the Pocket” (Fischer Verlag), “Dumont Travel Guide Japan,” “Dumont Picture Atlas Japan,” and “Japan for Carry-On Baggage” (Unionsverlag).
