Mainzer Johannisnacht

Mainz-Altstadt
on 25.06.2027 to 28.06.2027

From June 25 to June 28, 2027, the city center of Mainz will once again be all about the Johannisnacht. This traditional city festival in honor of Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of movable type printing, has been a fixed part of the Mainz event calendar for decades.

Live music, street art, and rides create a festive atmosphere in the squares and streets of the city center. On the banks of the Rhine, you can stroll through the popular artists' market and browse handmade jewelry, clothing, and creative one-of-a-kind pieces. The antiquarian book market around Schillerplatz and Ballplatz is also traditionally part of the Johannisnacht and is a lovely opportunity to search for old books and special finds.

A highlight is the "Gautschen," an ancient custom from the printing trade. Freshly trained printers are baptized with water according to the old tradition. The ceremony recalls the centuries-old history of printing, which remains closely connected to Mainz to this day.

To conclude the Johannisnacht, a drone light show is expected on Monday evening over the Rhine. Around 10:30 p.m., the drones will illuminate the night sky, marking the end of the four-day city festival.
