In 1266, the new construction of a Nikolaus Chapel is mentioned in the indulgence letter of the Archbishop of Mainz. It was a foundation of the Counts of Sponheim, who significantly influenced the development of the medieval town of Bad Kreuznach as the landowners. In 1281, the chapel was handed over to the Carmelite order. Afterwards, the construction of the present three-aisled basilica in the style of a mendicant order church began. The nave and high side walls date from this period. In the late 14th century, the choir was renewed. The current ribbed vault of the central nave dates from 1432. In the mid-15th century, the side aisles were extended to the east. In the 18th century, the interior furnishings were baroque-styled. From 1897 to 1905, restoration and tower construction took place according to plans by Ludwig Becker. Marita Peil has extensively studied the church and can also vividly present the furnishings with tombstones, a special reliquary, and the changes in the construction history. Entry is free.
