RHEINHESSEN LIEST: Carola Cernavin-Haupt liest Heinrich Bechtolsheimer

Carola Cernavin-Haupt reads from the novel “Between the Rhine and Donnersberg” by Heinrich Bechtolsheimer.
The novel “Between the Rhine and Donnersberg,” published in 1903 by Heinrich Bechtolsheimer (1868-1950), depicts life in Wonsheim and the nearby surroundings during the “French period” at the beginning of the 19th century. Bechtolsheimer’s debut novel is a vivid portrait of rural life from 1808-1814. The special charm of this still-readable story today lies in the empathetic and nuanced characterization of the characters as well as well-developed local and historical information. Born in Wonsheim as the eldest of 5 children, Bechtolsheimer studied Protestant theology in Gießen. From 1895, he was a pastor in Mainz and later in Gießen. He spent his later years with his daughter in Hanover, where he died in 1950. At his own request, he was buried in his birthplace. Carola Cernavin-Haupt, a literature and reading enthusiast and spokesperson for the Heinrich Bechtolsheimer Circle Wonsheim, reads excerpts from this novel and introduces the author.
