All cheese! That’s right, because the Oppenheim Cheese Market is all about the delicious products made from cow, sheep, and goat milk. On November 7 and 8, 2026, the Oppenheim marketplace and the adjacent streets will transform into a true cheese paradise.
The market is organized in collaboration between the city of Oppenheim and René Harth from Mein Rheinhessenwein. Together, they are setting a new delicious highlight in the city’s event calendar.
“Oppenheim has been a market town for over a thousand years. With the cheese market, we consciously connect to this tradition and develop it in a contemporary way. Such events strengthen our downtown, bring people together, and make Oppenheim visible as a city of enjoyment and experiences beyond the region,” emphasizes the First Alderman Stephan Arnold.
Enticing scents will fill the area around the historic town hall when several dozen vendors open their stalls. Classics like Emmental, Gouda, Edam, or Tilsiter will be displayed alongside creamy bries, hearty soft, and spicy hard cheeses. International specialties like Spanish Manchego, Italian Scamorza, Danish Esrom, or French Tête de Moine will complement the diverse offerings. Additionally, creams, spreads, salads, and other delicacies related to the theme of cheese will be available.
“The range at the Oppenheim Cheese Market combines great variety and the highest quality,” promises co-organizer René Harth of Mein Rheinhessenwein. The exhibitors come from all over Germany and neighboring countries, appealing to a gourmet audience.
Alongside the culinary offerings, exquisite wines from Rheinhessen will join the scene. Wine and cheese – a pairing that perfectly harmonizes. The market experience will be complemented by vendors of oil, vinegar, bread, and other gourmet products.
But it’s not just the offerings that make the charm – the setting is unique as well. The historic old town of Oppenheim, with its winding alleys, the marketplace, and the impressive cityscape, provides a picturesque backdrop for this special event. The city can look back on over 1000 years of market tradition – market rights were granted to it as early as the year 1008.
The landmark of the former free imperial city is the Katharinenkirche, one of the most significant Gothic church buildings along the Rhine between Cologne and Strasbourg. Another major attraction is the world-unique cellar labyrinth, whose corridors and vaults extend over more than 30 kilometers beneath the city.
In conjunction with the cheese market, the Tourist Information Oppenheim offers exciting tours through these attractions. This way, culinary and cultural delights can be beautifully combined: After strolling through the market, explore the cellar labyrinth, visit the Katharinenkirche, or experience history up close during a walk through the timber-framed streets.
Thus, the Oppenheim Cheese Market promises not only culinary highlights but also an enjoyable weekend in one of the most beautiful towns in Rheinhessen. Cheese lovers – and all those who want to become one – should mark their calendars for November 7 and 8, 2026.
