The concert program opens with the concert piece for four horns and orchestra by Robert Schumann – a work of the Romantic period that is both virtuosic and rich in tonal color. In an unusual composition, Schumann brings together four solo horns into a dialogical ensemble that combines technical brilliance with lyrical expression and impressively explores the sound possibilities of the instrument.
After the intermission, Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 5 in C-sharp minor follows. With this work, Mahler takes a decisive step in his symphonic development. From the dark funeral march at the beginning to the lively scherzo and the radiant finale, a wide emotional arc unfolds. Notably, the famous Adagietto has given the symphony worldwide recognition and remains a hallmark of late-Romantic tonal poetry to this day.
The program connects two central works from the 19th and early 20th centuries and spans an impressive arc from Romantic sound fantasy to existential symphonic drama.
