Weiberfastnacht, also known as Altweiberfastnacht, is an important part of the Mainz Carnival and traditionally takes place on the Thursday before Rose Monday. As a highlight of the fifth season, it marks the beginning of the colorful days of street carnival "uff de Gass." Schillerplatz becomes the center of the festive activities. Weiberfastnacht is particularly known for its lively atmosphere and the symbolic takeover of power by women. The streets, squares, and pubs in Mainz are filled on this day with costumed people celebrating and dancing together in high spirits.

The Mainz Carnival, also known as "Meenzer Fassenacht," makes Mainz one of the largest and most traditional carnival strongholds in Germany. It is characterized by its sharp-tongued political humor and attracts thousands of visitors every year.

Note: There is a glass ban in place at Schillerplatz and in the surrounding area. Visitors should expect controls in the festival area.
