The old Jewish cemetery "Judensand," located in the Upper Town of Mainz, was designated as the first Jewish UNESCO World Heritage Site in Germany in 2021, along with other sites of Jewish history in Rhineland-Palatinate. With nearly 1,500 historical tombstones, it is a crucial component of the serial World Heritage "SchUM." Its centuries-old history can be vividly traced through the preserved tombstones, some of which have been standing at this location since the 11th century, enduring weather conditions and deliberate destruction.
