Battenfeld-Spanier

Battenfeld Spanier is located in Hohen-Sülzen in the southern Wonnegau of Rheinhessen. There, the best vineyards are criss-crossed by mighty subterranean limestone beds, from which the vines can absorb the important nutrients with their roots during the warm summer months. It is this "lime buffer" that adds a tremendous amount of tension and vibration to the wines of Battenfeld-Spanier. For HO Spanier, the Riesling is like the ideal interpreter, who translates the extremely lime-rich soils of southern Wonnegaus into wine. And that is what interests him: the spectrum of aromas of the stones and the soil, located beyond the perishable fruit. Dancing minerals. Saline origin character. Feuerstein.

The languages spoken in the winery are German, English and French

Hohen-Sülzener Kirchenstück

Hohen-Sülzener Kirchenstück (Church piece of Hohen-Sülzen)

The monastery cooks already knew what was good.

The site was first mentioned in a document in 1297 with the name "iuxta Kirchenstücke". "iuxta" is Latin and means "close to". Either this piece of land was intended for the upkeep of a monastery kitchen or it generally referred to a church property. Hohen-Sülzen appears under the names "Sulza" (1140), "Sulzen" (1200), "Horsulzen" (1238) and "Sulczen" (1355) and lay in the old "Wormsgau". Riesling and Pinot Noir grow here on loess, loam and soft limestone. Wines with opulent fruit and multi-dimensional character are produced here.

> In the photos: This is a small windmill, but not for power generation, but for wind turbulence when the vines are threatened with frost.

Nieder-Flörsheimer Frauenberg

Nieder-Flörsheimer Frauenberg (Women’s mountain of Nieder-Flörsheim)

Of nuns and damsels

Women were once in charge here: the site was first mentioned in a document in 1290 with the name "an frauwenhalten". Originally, the hill was owned by a nunnery. Riesling and Pinot Noir vines grow on loess and limestone. Benches and a table at the "Fräulein von Flersheim" trullo can be used for a rest. In summer, roses bloom lushly there. The red vineyard hut at the Goldbergbrunnen is partly catered for.

Mölsheimer Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott

Mölsheimer Zellerweg am Schwarzen Herrgott (Zellerweg at the Black Lord's Cross of Mölsheim)

A weathered cross and two intersecting vineyards

This is one of the oldest vineyards in Germany: it was mentioned in a document as early as 1307 with the name "an Seller Weg". The name goes back to a wayside cross on the road to Zell (Donnersbergkreis/Kirchheimbolanden). Saint Philip of Zell is said to have placed a weathered cross here in the 8th century. A special feature of the site: the border between southernmost Rheinhessen and northern Pfalz runs right through the middle of the vineyards. Excellent mineral Rieslings and Pinot Noirs grow on heavy limestone and marl soils. The "Weinrast" a wine booth, is located in the middle of the site and offers a magnificent view over the valley. The site also contains two vineyard houses - a round tower from 1884 and a neo-Baroque mansard roof building from the 1920s.
