Since around the year 1000, Jews have been settled in Worms, considered a particularly esteemed SchUM community that gained special authority in legal and religious matters from the 12th/13th century onwards. Today, the long tradition of Judaism in the city can be traced, especially through the Jewish cemetery "Heiliger Sand," which has been continuously used since at least 1050, and the Romanesque synagogue, built concurrently with the Worms Cathedral.
