For centuries, trading has taken place around the Mainz Cathedral. By the time the construction of the cathedral began around 975, the square must have developed into the most important trading place for goods in Mainz. Today, the stalls are spread out over the marketplace and Liebfrauenplatz, between the cathedral and the reconstructed facades of the colorful market houses.

You can find fresh fruit and vegetables from the region, flowers, and many seasonal items here. In the particularly busy months, 20 to 30 additional daily stalls are added. Get yourself a Mainz meat sausage with a bread roll, a coffee from a local roastery, or sit in one of the cafés around the square and watch the happenings at the market for a while.

On Saturdays, many continue to the market breakfast at Fischtorplatz, Tritonplatz, or Schillerplatz. Because a wine spritzer from the Mainz winemakers is simply a must-have for a real market Saturday.
