Towards the end of the 19th century, a strong population growth and several unusually dry years in Rheinhessen led to a severe water shortage; after almost all wells in Saulheim dried up around 1900, the water engineer Bruno von Böhmer developed a new supply system, in which groundwater from the Rhine Valley was distributed via elevated tanks – an important part of this is the water house built in Art Nouveau style in 1905 on the Haubenberg, from which the water flowed to Ober-Saulheim by natural gradient.
