Location of the Mainz Gate
The gatehouse flanked by a tower originally had tall gabled stairs. After being shelled by Spanish artillery in 1621, it was renewed in a more modest form.
Above the gate lived a gatekeeper. Until 1806, it had to close "precisely at 10:00 PM".
