Bingen, on the Nahe; view towards Bingen and Burg Klopp
Before Turner arrived at the docks on the Rhine on the evening of August 25, 1817, to continue his journey by ship, he made a sketch stop at the crossing of the Nahe. The completed watercolor depicts parts of the city of Bingen, the watchful Burg Klopp above, and Burg Ehrenfels in the distance. In the foreground, the Drusus Bridge is portrayed, behind which the Nahe flows into the Rhine not far away. In this image, Turner achieves a successful contrast effect of light and shadow with the gathering thunderclouds, giving the picture a dramatic accent. The image shows a certain compositional closeness to Turner's paintings of Koblenz with the Moselle Bridge. The location itself is currently inaccessible. The view towards the Rheingau can be experienced from the Drusus Bridge.
