Prof. Dr. Sommer, Debile Despoten? Caligula, Nero, and other monsters
Who doesn't know Peter Ustinov as Emperor Nero? Perhaps some have heard of the autocratic monstrosity Caligula as well. What is there to these assessments? Just bad press or cruel reality?
The speaker has become known in recent years as a bestselling author and for his unique approach to antiquity.
Notably, the title of his latest book is “The Damn Bloody History of Antiquity: Without All the Boring Stuff” (with Stefan von der Lahr).
Prof. Dr. Michael Sommer teaches Ancient History at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg. As an expert in Roman economic, social, and mental history, he knows what he is talking about when he presents figures like Caligula, Nero, and their ilk – as debile despots?
